Biography - Who am Eye?

I’m Ron Mavin, but by brand I go by ‘VISRON’ - A merge of vision and Ron!

I’m an illustrator, artist and day dreamer with a love for kaleidoscopic, funky visuals. I currently practice in Sydney, NSW where I am studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School, Darlinghurst.

Growing up in the rural town of Kempsey, NSW, I spent my youth absorbed in the vividness of popular culture and sublime of the country. Characters, colours and patterns headlined the TV cartoons, movies and video games, covered merchandise from t-shirts to toys and were in all forms of advertisements. Manifesting these impressions, arts and crafts became my favourite childhood activity where my inspirations began to flourish into further creations. At 8, I inscribed my childhood ambition in my A5 journal; “WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE AN ARTIST”.

Today, I still share that same vision as my younger self; albeit stronger. Where my mind wanders, my hand expresses. I continue to be inspired by the ‘consumerist vs creative world’ and all the graphical aesthetics, commodification of objects, cultural trends and visual spectacles that reside in human culture. In the whirl, I have found my art practice to be the best means of expressing identity and navigating the overwhelm of a contemporary, over-saturated society.

Earlier inspirations to create were found in Pokemon and Minecraft. Nowadays, I am generally inspired by the vast information that floods the senses on a daily basis. Specifically I am inspired by: The Memphis design movement, naturalistic patterns, surrealism, vapour wave, botanical forms, gritty urban aesthetics, retro technologies, street art, mosaics, birds, pop art, advertisements, microscopic imagery, robotics and capitalist ideals. Artists that continue to inspire my creative practice include Andy Warhol, Vexx, Zosen Bandido, Gaston Pacheco, Jorsh Pena, Barry McGee, Felipe Pantone and Shaun Tan.

I see Art as a language of comprehension; a therapy of awareness in its own right. From the meditative process of building a picture, to the acceptance of triumphs and mistakes in the final result. The gentle blending of colours and concepts while engaging with the commonplace in an unorthodox, new perspective. Through these interactions of the mind and hand, a sense of individualism and understanding resides that is personal, lived time immortalised in pictures.

When I’m away from page and pencil, I love writing poetry, reading the New Philosopher magazine, playing around with film-making, geocaching, beach wandering for shells, running, observing the local cockatoos, jamming to S U R V I V E and playing my little synth keyboard.

Artists Statement

My artistic practice embodies the vast sensations, structures, objects, aesthetics and concepts that formulate our understanding of contemporary society and self. Experimenting with the chaos of being ‘overwhelmed’ in culture, I engage with notions of experience, identity and consumption.

Throughout my practice I draw upon a wide range of conceptual and visual elements that collide with my daily experiences. Some of which include: pop culture phenomena, ornamentation motifs, naturalistic patterns, graphic trends, birds, cartoon characters, geometric compositions, advertised commodities and urban aesthetics.

In engaging these elements through a Post-Modern lens, I aim to articulate the dichotomy of identity that exists between consumption and culture, understand contemporary sensations and emphasise the unorthodox expression of self. I resonate with the maximalist aesthetic through the means of illustrating ‘brain dumps’ in a refined style, creating kaleidoscopic works that are ambiguously playful.

Both visually and metaphorically, a contrast between contained individualism and chaotic collectivism is established. Through an intense visual field, a unique perspective of reality is revealed that allows the individual to conclude with their own interpretations, connotations and observations.
